V. Jean (Smith) Mellon Obituary (1921

Velma "Jean" Smith Mellon Beaver Falls Velma "Jean" Smith Mellon, 93, of Beaver Falls, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25, 2015 in the Providence Health Care Center. A lifelong resident of Beaver County; she was born on December 24, 1921. She was the daughter of the late Leroy and Edith Garlack Smith. Jean was employed at Westinghouse Electric Company in Vanport and she retired with 34 years of service. She was known for many years for her beautiful voice, and was nicknamed the Kate Smith of Beaver County. Jean had her own radio show in Beaver County and sang for many of the grand openings of hotels and various businesses, including the opening of the Brodhead Hotel. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Robert W. Mellon in 2007, three brothers, Leroy K. Smith, Harold Smith, Robert Smith, and two sisters, Mildred Green and Ida Prunty. She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Wanda and Tony Suroweic, Beaver Falls, and several nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial visitation on Wednesday from 6 p.m. until the time of the service at 8 p.m. in the Hill & Kunselman Funeral Home, www.hillandkunselman.com., 3801 Fourth Ave., College Hill, Beaver Falls, with Rev. Rodney E. Smith, pastor of the Chippewa United Methodist Church officiating. Private interment in Beaver Falls Cemetery, Chippewa Township. Her family would like to thank the staff at Providence Health Care Center and the hospice nurses for their loving support during Jean's final days.
