Dr. Samuel Mitrovich Jr Obituary (2011)

Dr. Samuel Mitrovich Jr. age 66, of Windy Ghoul, Beaver born in Aliquippa, former longtime resident of Sewickley Heights, passed away June 27th, 2011. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Lois R. Brozenick; proud father of Samuel, Milan, and Michael Mitrovich; delighted grandfather of Nadia, Elena, Isaac, and Sasha Mitrovich. Dr. Mitrovich completed his undergraduate and Master's degrees in biology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and completed his PhD. in biochemistry at the University of Texas-Austin and the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Mitrovich was an innovative teacher of biology at Freedom Area High School for forty years. He was the recipient of numerous teaching awards including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching, Pennsylvania Science Teacher of the Year, Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award, Region 1 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year, Outstanding Pennsylvania Science Teacher (Pennsylvania Electric Association), The Keivin Burns High School Science Teacher Award (Spectroscopy Society of Pittsburgh), and the Distinguished Alumni Award from IUP. He was co-founder and principle scientist at Chem-Space Associates, an expert in liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, and co-author of the book 'A Global View of LC/MS'. Dr. Mitrovich was an award-winning cabinet maker, sculptor and lifelong learner with interests in Russian literature, jazz and classical music, philosophy, and robotics. He was a cofounder of the McConnell's Mills Preservation Association and Ohio Valley Montessori School. To honor Dr. Mitrovich's request, in lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Dr. Samuel Mitrovich Scholarship Fund for Biology Students at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, care of Alumni Relations, Sutton Hall, 1011 South Drive, Indiana PA 15705.
